Africa is blogging, too. South Africa is leading the way, with more than 3 million unique users visiting South African blogs every month. High profile South African blogs include Commentary – which focuses on topics like race relations and economics – and Human vs. Nature, an earnest environmental issues weblog. The country recently held its first “Blog Awards”, with the pop-culture oriented 20oceansvibe taking home top prize. South Africa has the best technology infrastructure south of the Sahara, so it’s little wonder they are ahead of the curve in African web publishing. With an average internet penetration rate of 1.5%, and countries like Niger and Ethiopia sitting at less than 0.1%, it may be some time before blogging is a continent-wide phenomenon.
