Social Capital Definitions
- "Bonding Social Capital"- Deepening contact with people of similar beliefs or interests. (Norris 2002).
- "Bridging Social Capital"- widening contact with people from diverse social backgrounds (Norris 2002).
- Digital divide- Refers to the social inequality of access to cyberspace. (Putnam, 2000)
- Emoticons- In computer text messages the use of symbols which are to symbolize emotions ie: J, L, K, these are meant to resemble the nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions and body language, that takes place during face-to-face interaction.
- Flaming- The use of extreme language on the Internet. "A compelling image of communications as hand-to-hand combat with flame throwers." (Putnam, 2000)
- Gemeinschaft- Any erosion in the traditional face-to-face sociability and personal communication in modern societies, which many believe represents a threat to the quality of civic life, collaborative social exchanges, and the community spirit. (Norris, 2002)
- Social Capital- Refers to social networks, norms and trust that "facilitates coordination for mutual benefits." (Putnam, 2000)
- Glocalization- A combination of long-distance "global" interaction and within - 'Netville' "local" interaction.
