How to Upload your Web Site

Here's what to do with those brilliant web sites once they are finished:

Print a copy of your web site to submit in class on April 4. If you wrote your paper in Word (or another word processor) before turning it into a site, you can print the Word version (don't worry about formatting). Alternately you can print your site from Netscape (from the browser, not from Composer) or Explorer by navigating through your site and printing each page in turn. Don't worry if it looks strange, as long as all the text is there and is readable.

For the electronic version of your site, e-mail me the site and I will upload it to the course site. Please send me the electronic version before class on April 4. Here's how:

1. First, make sure that all the files for your site (including images) are in one folder. This folder can contain subfolders (such as a folder just for images). This folder should ONLY contain files for this site -- if it contains other files, please move those files into a different folder. If you have to move your site files around to get them all into one folder, please doublecheck that your site still works before sending it.

2. Compress ("archive") your web site folder by turning it into a single .zip or .sit file. Instructions on how to archive on a Windows PC or a Mac are below. Make sure this file has your name on it; for example I would name mine ASamuel.zip or ASamuel.sit

3. Upload your archived file using the upload page. In step 1, click the button that lets you choose the file to upload from your hard drive or floppy. In step 2, click send and wait for confirmation that the file was uploaded.

4. Send me an e-mail to let me know you have uploaded your site, and let me know whether you want your web site to be for my eyes only, for the class to see, or for the wide world to see.

5. Celebrate. You're done!!

Archiving your Site: Windows instructions

You will need an archiving program, such as WinZip, to complete this task. WinZip may already be installed on your machine (look for it under "Programs" on the Windows Start Menu, or search for it using "Find Files or Folders"). If not, click here to download WinZip (it's free). The download includes information on installing; note that this may require restarting your computer once you are finished installing. Once the program is installed, follow the directions below.

From "Archiving Files Using WinZip" by Angela Booth

Here's a fast way to create a zipped archive using WinZip, a popular Windows archiving program. If you're using a different archiving program, it will operate much as WinZip does.

1. Open Windows Explorer. (The fastest way is to press the hotkey combination Windows Key + E; the Windows key is the key with the Windows icon next to the Control key on your keyboard.)
2. Navigate to the drive and folder where your web site files are stored. All the files must be in one folder, though this can contain subfolders. If this involves moving your files around, make sure that the site still works before you zip it.
3. Select the folder containing your site files.
4. Click on the right-hand pane to move the focus to the files list.
5. To zip all the files in the folder, press Ctrl+A. (The Control button on your keyboard and A.) All the files in the folder will be selected (highlighted).
6. Release the Ctrl key. Right click on any selected file, so that the right-click context menu opens. You'll see an option "Add to Zip." Select that option.
7. The WinZip dialog box opens. The drive/folder will already be entered in the Add To Archive box. The default is the current folder, but you can change this. Save the folder as your name with .zip on the end, e.g. Samuel.zip.
10. Click on Add. The files will be compressed into a zipped archive. Close WinZip.
10. You'll see your archive of files "yourname.zip" in Windows Explorer. Your original files remain.

Archiving your Site: Mac Instructions

You will need Stuffit or Stuffit Lite (a free program) to archive your folder. If you don't have it installed, click here to download. When you click the "download now" button, you will be taken to the Stuffit site, where you will see a login window. Where it stays "PLEASE MAKE A SELECTION" click and scroll down the appropriate operating system -- probably either Mac OS 8.1-9x, or Mac OS X.

Choose one of the the files in ".sit" format (one of the top 2 selections in the pull-down menu.) Also you probably want to uncheck "Yes, I would like to be notified of upgrades & other offers" to prevent getting junkmail from this site. Click "Download Now", and the file will download and then install -- no restart required.

Archiving with Stuffit

1. Find the Stuffit folder on your hard drive (Stuffit may leave the window open after installing; or you can use Sherlock to search for "Stuffit" on your hard drive.) Open it so that you see the icon for DropStuff.
2. Find the folder that contains your web site files. All the files should be in one folder (though this can contain subfolders). If this involves moving your files around, make sure that the site still works before you stuff it.
3. Drag the folder containing your web site files onto the DropStuff icon (this will involve having two windows open on your desktop). DropStuff will open its registration window; just click on "not yet". DropStuff will then create a file called foldername.sit in the same directory that held your orginal folder. So if your folder was called 328site, the file will be called 328site.sit. Your original folder (and files) are still there, too.
4. Rename the archive file as "yourname.sit" (e.g. Samuel.sit). You're done!
